Marketplace Morning Report®

with David Brancaccio

Marketplace Morning Report for Monday, August 12, 2013

With less ice in the Arctic, a new path for global trade is opening up for Asian exporters. It's called the Northern Sea route, and right now a Chinese cargo ship is giving it a try from a port in China's northeast. It's common for companies to pay academics for research and development in the hopes of fueling innovation in the market. A new study today from the British publication Times Higher Education suggests that scholars from East Asia may be more valuable to corporations than their western counterparts. And, a look at a Syrian refugee camp in Turkey. Over the last 18 months, some one and a half million Syrians have fled the violence in their home country, and as many as half a million have ended up in neighboring Turkey. Marketplace Morning Report visits a Syrian family trying to get back on their feet.
