Podcasts to get a special place on your iPhone

Marc Sanchez Jun 18, 2012

iOS6 is set to roll out this fall, and details about the update to Apple’s operating system are beginning to trickle out as developers get a peek at the product. If you listen to podcasts on your iPhone, get ready for a new, standalone app.

Peter Kafka at All Things D writes:

People familiar with Apple’s plans tell me that when its new iOS 6 software becomes widely available this fall, podcasts will have their own app, where users will be able to discover, download and play them on mobile devices. Users who access iTunes via laptop and desktop machines will still find them in that version of iTunes, though.

Note that this change will only apply to users who access podcasts on their iPhones. If you use your computer to download, listen, and transfer podcasts, you will still be able to find them through the iTunes store. One thing I’m hoping for in the standalone app: subscriptions. I listen to a lot of podcasts, most of which aren’t updated at the same time, and I would love it if the app told me when there was a new episode waiting for me. Fingers crossed.
