Frugal travels

Having a low budget doesn't mean you can't travel, but there are some extra precautions you should take when planning your budget trip.

How satisfying is it to find the best hotel deal? The cheapest flight? To outsmart all those other sheep and book your trip when the crowds will be thin and you can have the whole place to yourself? Satisfying, Maybe, at least at first. Smart? Eh, that depends.

Meg Favreau of Wisebread.com shared some frugal traveling tips. Among them:

"A mistake -- I know I've made in the past and I know frugal travels make -- is considering only money and not time," she said.

Sometimes it's worth coughing up the extra $50 for a plane ticket to avoid multiple layovers and hours lost in airports. She also says to be wary of traveling in the off-season. While you may have a city to yourself, that city may not have essentials like restaurants and attractions open during your visit. Listen to the interview above to get more tips on how to travel without spending too much but still enjoying yourself.

Hello. We were listening in the car to the story, and heard AirBNB mentioned. I thought I would share our awful experience of a week ago, hoping that unsuspecting users (like I) learn something from our use of AirBNB. I stayed last weekend at an AirBNB listed apartment - that turned out to be one of these illegal hotels run by the host who leases a lot of apartments in NYC (he told me) and then turns around and rents them out on a per night basis to people like me. On Friday, the 27th, someone with a key to the apartment (1B, 8 Jones St., NYC) stole my laptop while I was away at dinner. I called the police and they were very attentive, although I will not be seeing my computer again. Neither the host nor AirBNB was at all helpful - the host told me he didn't even believe me! (It was also the case that the apartment lacked a fire alarm and that the one means of escape through the courtyard was locked -- from the outside.) I want to shut this person down, even if I will not recover anything, and want AirBNB to not allow these operations to list with them. Thanks. James
