Being middle class is going shopping with a friend at the Porsche dealership. And dreaming that one day, you too can drive one off the lot.

This represents the middle class because the cornerstone of achieving that status is education.  Education Is stressed among middle class families, so whenever a son, daughter, grandson graduates from college IT’S HUGE!

This photo of my father and me has a lot of personal meaning. But it’s also a great picture of what “middle class” meant to my family.  My father’s wearing a suit, dress shirt and tie - he’s a professional.  He’s holding me in one hand – he’s a dad - and a newspaper in the other – he’s educated, and has every expectation that his little girl will go to college one day, too.  We are comfortable, content, secure.

This is a Polaroid that I had on my fridge for years. It made its way through several moves and the tiniest of Manhattan apartments. To me, the middle class is about working really hard for the necessities of life while still daydreaming (or actively working towards) a little something extra – like a great pair of heels that I promise you I will one day be able to afford.

I consider myself middle class, but on the lower end of that qualitative term. I'm single with no children and make around $50,000 a year. This is a shot of me at my desk at work. Without a job I wouldn't be middle class.
