That’s the size of the Medicaid industry, which this week will see health insurers meeting in Washington. On top of the agenda: taking a look at social factors that many Medicaid directors believe drive up ER and hospitalization rates for a small number of patients.
That’s how many cities in which Airbnb now operates, with as many as two million listings. The company released what its calling a “Airbnb Community Compact,” which vows to work with cities to hammer out taxation, and sharing data on owners and renters on the platform. As the New York Times writes, this is a marked reversal of attitudes from last week, when the company touted its defeat of a measure in San Francisco that would have hampered its operations.
That’s minimum wage in Berkeley, California. It’s one of the few states where waiters make minimum wage in addition to tips. That’s why Andrew Hoffman, owner of Mexican restaurant Comal, has decided to eliminate tipping, instead opting for a 20 percent service fee on all tabs. Hoffman argues it allows him to spread the money more evenly among his staff. And so far, his servers are happy with the change. But the experiment has failed at other restaurants, where owners have found themselves reinstating tips to keep waiters from quitting.
