The Numbers for Thursday, January 9: Brains

$1 billion

The amount IBM has announced it will be investing in its artificial intelligence project, Watson. The supercomputer famously beat the top human competitors in Jeopardy three years ago, but since then has failed to generate much money for IBM. The company still thinks there is potential for Watson, however, and will be dedicating a new headquarters in Manhattan — and eventually 2,000 employees — to a new Watson division.  (Marketplace)

$50,000

The amount of Kickstarter funds raised overnight for Pocket Drones, a project by startup company AirDroids to sell small drone helicopters capable of folding to fit inside your backpack or cargo pants pocket. The original funding target was $30,000 for the project that launched at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show. The drones will cost $415 for a model without a controller and $455 for one with a controller. (TechCrunch)
