Kai Ryssdal: We’re taking just a little bit of time this week for a quick look at the labor market, and how people have different opinions about it and about looking for jobs, depending on how long they’ve been in the labor market.

Today, somebody who just said goodbye to his 40s.

Ted Buckner: My name is Ted Buckner and I live in Raleigh, N.C. I just turned 50 and I was unemployed from February of 2009 until June 2010. My current contract is ongoing; depending on the economy, I could get word anytime that my contract is terminated. There are a number of pitfalls with contract work aside from not getting benefits: you don’t really get the feeling like you own the work that I produce.

I do remember, there was a time I couldn’t even find contract work. So that I have that now, I’m quite grateful for it, at least financially. So right now at this step, I’m looking for something more meaningful to do.
