Apple to buy Hulu?

John Moe Jul 22, 2011

That’s the rumor floating around this morning courtesy of Bloomberg. Not that it will happen but that it might. Apple joins a long list of possible suitors for the on-the-market streaming video service. It’s a bit out of character for Apple to make big acquisitions since, obviously, those other properties were not invented by Apple therefore how can they be any good (not a direct quote, merely a commentary on Apple elitism)? But Apple has 76 billion dollars in cash on hand and is currently the world’s second most valuable company and sometimes you just don’t want to leave that kind of dough in the checking account.

This would be bonkers huge for the streaming entertainment market since it would give Netflix a real competitor. You’d have Hulu’s catalog and partnerships, Apple’s devices and muscle and current partnerships as well.

Of course, this might not happen at all. It could be bunk. Or possibly hooey. Or some sort of negotiating leverage ploy on the part of someone else.
