Playlist: Housing outlook and flooding in the Midwest

For Marketplace, Monday, May 9, 2011

The outlook for housing remains dreary. Damage estimates are rising for the floods now reaching Memphis, and it’s not clear who will be paying. That argument is going on in Japan as well, over who should pay for the mess at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, and the disruption caused by radiation leaks from the plant. Facing budget cuts, California and other states are considering letting their most selective research universities set their own, higher tuitions. In New Hampshire, the House has voted to cut $650 million from the budget and one senator is trying to balance competing needs and priorities. Apple tops the list for brand value, beating Google and McDonald’s, among others. And the same technology and social media that made the protests in the Middle East successful is now being used by autocrats to spy on citizens. Here are the songs we played:

  • How Long Do I Have to Wait for You – Sharon Jones & the Dap KingsBuy
  • What Have I Done to Deserve This? – Pet Shop BoysBuy
  • For a Few Dollars More – Will T. BearBuy
  • The Tallest Man, the Broadest Shoulders Part I: The Great Frontier Part II: Come to Me Only With Playthings Now – Sufjan StevensBuy
  • Faithful – AnwarriorBuy
