This is kind of a weird story but also a pretty interesting one. Tech Crunch is reporting on a shift in nomenclature and possibly focus at Google away from the thing that we have always known them for. Google has had seven main employee groups: Advertising, Commerce & Local, Mobile (Android), Social, Chrome, YouTube and Search. They're like big departments. Except when Larry Page took over as CEO last month, the Search group was renamed the Knowledge group.
Page, say our sources, has for a long while been thinking of search as much more than Google's original mission to "organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful." His goal is about more than organizing that information, though. It's also about enhancing people's understanding and facilitating the creation of knowledge.
Still, the idea of renaming and refocusing the core product of your operation? That's kind of bonkers, right?
