How to make a rusty nail wind chime
In her new book, “Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People,” author and humorist Amy Sedaris offers instructions for dozens of nifty homemade object d’art and assorted gifts, from crab-claw roach clips to rusty nail wind chimes. She’s got how-tos for myriad things that – truth be told — you may not make, but will make you laugh.
In this photo essay, the Marketplace staff decided to try out one of the projects from the book: a rusty wind chime. Here’s how Sedaris describes the project: “On an emotional downswing, toss a fistful of nails into your backyard. At a later date, during a manic phase, search the yard for what are now rusty nails. Once collected, string them together to make a wind chime.”
Here’s our step-by-step tutorial:
Step 1. Grab wire coat hanger from your closet
Step 2. Form it into a corkscrew
Steps 3. Gather colorful string – red, blues – depending on your mood. Tie string to top of nail.
Step 4. Allow for about 10 inches of string before tying to hanger
Step 5. Tie string to hanger and tie neatly – you don’t want extra string hanging off.
Step 6. For best results use at least 9 nails – more if want a lot of chime
