What’s the word?

Scott Jagow May 29, 2009

In one word, how are you feeling about the economy today? I ask because the New York Times has a new feature which allows you to enter one word once a day describing your current mood about the economy.

I found it on the same page as the Times’ new Happy Days blog. The tagline for that is “The Pursuit of What Matters in Troubled Times.”

The severe economic downturn has forced many people to reassess their values and the ways they act on them in their daily lives. For some, the pursuit of happiness, sanity, or even survival, has been transformed.

Happy Days is a discussion about the search for contentment in its many forms — economic, emotional, physical, spiritual — and the stories of those striving to come to terms with the lives they lead.

I think it’s a cool idea.

So, back to the word of the day. Today, I’m feeling pragmatic about the economy. I’ve felt a wide range of emotions in recent weeks, from frustrated to trepidatious to hopeful. But today, I’m thinking the economy is what it is, and I just have to deal. So, pragmatic is my word.
